Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the beginning of Spanish Republican Exile at the end of the Spanish Civil War, this event brings together scholars and artists to discuss the presence and legacies of Spanish Republican exiles in Britain within a longer history of Spanish political exiles taking refuge in this country.
This event is a collaboration between CILAVS and the Instituto Cervantes, London, and it is part of the events organised by the Instituto Cervantes to mark the 80th Anniversary of the end of the Spanish Civil War, which led to the exile of thousands of Republican Spanish citizens: Skies So Unlike Their Own: A Celebration of Spanish Exile in the UK, 1939. I would have loved to attend the conference tomorrow and share in the discussions. I am one of the trustees of the Association for the Basque Children of ‘37UK. Please convey our kindest regards to all attending. The 25,000 children evacuated from the Basque Country in 1937 went to France, Britain, Belgium, URSS, and Mexico. Of the 4000 who came to Britain 400 remained as exiles and made their lives here in the U.K. Our Association is one of the earliest Historical Memory organisations founded in 2000. My great-grandfather’s brother, Gerardo Jimenez Hernandez, was exiled from Spain in London. I am looking for relatives who can reside in this city. Can you help me? Sincerely,
